St. Michael’s Hospital Archives

Archival collection contains selected administrative papers of St. Michael’s which date from its founding in 1892 to the present, including,

  • architectural records, legal documents, financial documents, news clippings, maps, meeting minutes and agendas
  • case files, personnel and subject files, research files, patient registers, personal and business correspondence
  • scrapbooks, news clippings, sketches (drawings, etchings, cartoons, diagrams), class notes, diaries, journals, notebooks, photographs

Seven permanent display cases were held in Bond Street Lobby documenting the milestones and medical achievements of St. Michael’s Hospital. However, these displays have been taken down and are being re-located.

United Church of Canada Archives

The United Church of Canada Archives includes the General Council Archives and the Central Ontario Conferences Archives serving Bay of Quinte, Hamilton, London, Manitou and Toronto Conferences. Material types within our collection include textual records, photographs, audiovisual and architectural records.

The collections include the following:

  • General Council records, photographs and audiovisual records.
  • Records of antecedent denominations, including Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregationalist, and union, prior to establishment of the United Church in 1925.
  • Records created by individuals and organizations affiliated with the United Church of Canada, including those of former staff, including those operating overseas, and ecumenical and interchurch organizations.
  • Records of 15 Indian Residential Schools, operated, prior to 1925, by the Methodist and Presbyterian churches and afterword by the United Church of Canada, primarily in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
  • Conference and presbytery records for Bay of Quinte, Hamilton, London, Manitou, and Toronto.
  • Microfilm collection including, baptismal, marriage, and burial records, including those of the Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational and Evangelical United Brethren Churches, and, notably, the Wesleyan Methodist Baptismal Register for the period 1826-1910.

University Health Network Archives

  • Fonds of doctors, medical students and researchers including, Dr. Donald Henry Cowan (1940 – 2011), Dr. O Harold Warick (2006 – 2008), Dr. W.G. Bigelow (1932 – 1993), Edward Shorter (1978 – 1994), Mary E. Clarke (1937 – 1940).
  • Toronto General Hospital fonds (1819 – 1986), consisting of administrative records of the administration and numerous medical departments.
  • Grace Hospital Ephemera Collection (1912, 1919), which focuses on nurse training. It consists of photographs and objects related to Grace Hospital and its predecessor, the Toronto Homeopathic Hospital, and its staff and students including Grace Hospital Training School for Nurses.
  • Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital fonds (1921 – 1997), includes textual records, photographs, architectural drawings, audio and video cassettes.
  • Toronto Hospital Records (1986 – 2000) and Ephemera Collection (1874 – 2011), includes a wide range of textual administrative records, photographs and drawings.
  • Toronto Western Hospital School of Nursing (1822 – 1998), Ephemera Collection (1909 – 1976) and Hospital fonds (1894 – 1986), consists of textual records, photographs and architectural drawings.
  • University Health Network Ephemera Collection (1999 – 2011) and Record Group (1941 – 2015), includes textual records and photographs.

Exhibitions are rotating, often focused on contemporary Canadian design. Past exhibits include: Stephen Burks Man Made Toronto, Designers in the Classroom, RGD Spacial Graphics and Capacity – an exploration of women in design.

Tours focus on the architectural history of the financial district from 1900s to present day.

Many artefacts are used in the permanent on-site exhibit, others are stored off-site with Heritage Trust. Objects at the museum include:

  • Children’s apparel (pinafores, collars, gloves, dresses, shoes).

  • For school aged children, experiential curriculum targeted towards grades 1 to 8 presents life as a Victorian child.
  • Older students can tour the facility and the adjacent neighborhood to learn more about 20th century immigration to Toronto.

Gardiner Museum

Taras Shevchenko Museum

Museum

  • Artistic copies of Shevchenko’s art.
  • Several editions of Shevchenko’s Kobzar and a large facsimile copy of Shevchenko’s diary.
  • Ukrainian handicrafts and folk art, including traditional clothing, Ukrainian eggs, embroidery, wood carving, and musical instruments.
  • 1861 Taras Shevchenko death mask is the most valuable item in the museum’s collection.
  • Paintings, etchings, illustrations, posters and artefacts of Ukrainian and Ukrainian Canadian cultural life.
  • Two important monuments of Shevchenko that document the cultural endeavors of the AUUC in Toronto.

Library

  • A substantial collection of books and pamphlets by Shevchenkiana, including facsimiles of the first edition of Shevchenko’s first collection of poetry.

Public Programming:

Exhibitions

  • Shevchenko’s life, art, and poetry, including a prominent exhibit on Shevchenko’s time in exile in the Russian Far East, with paintings documenting a Russian military expeditions to the Aral Sea.
  • The history of Ukrainian immigration to Canada, including passports, naturalization certificates, and other papers documenting the migration of Ukrainians to Canada, union cards, and Workmen’s Compensation cards.
  • Ukrainian handicrafts, furniture, and folk art.
  • The works of contemporary Ukrainian painters and sculptors.

Education

The museum offers tours to schoolchildren as well as to university students and scholarly organizations.
